Stressed Out at Work? You're Not Alone

Recently, there has been a significant increase in the number of employees requesting stress leave from work.  This change has been particularly noticeable since after the pandemic. The reasons range from stress arising out of increased expectations at work, changes to the environment due to work/home/hybrid model. Interestingly many employees are reaching out for therapy and counselling supports to deal with stress arising out of their jobs.

Workplace stress occurs when the demand of the job exceeds an individual's capacity or resources . It occurs across the economy and affects employees across various industries and job levels. This can be triggered by factors such as excessive workload, tight deadlines, lack of control, unclear expectations, interpersonal conflicts, and organizational changes. The consequences of workplace stress can be far-reaching, impacting not only an individual's well-being but also their productivity, engagement, and overall job satisfaction. Moreover, it can lead to various health problems, including cardiovascular disease, mental health disorders, and musculoskeletal disorders, ulcers etc.

Workplace stress is an inevitable part of modern life, but it doesn't have to control you. Developing and implementing effective coping mechanisms can significantly improve your well-being and job satisfaction.

Here are some ways to effectively cope with workplace stress:

1) Identify your stressors. What aspects of your job trigger anxiety or tension? Is it the workload, the deadlines, monotony, interpersonal conflicts? Once you identify the root causes, you can develop targeted solutions. A worry log can help identify your triggers and stressors.

2) Consider establishing healthy boundaries. It's essential to separate work life from personal life. Set specific work hours and avoid checking emails or taking work calls outside those times. In Ontario as of December 2021, employers with 25 or more employees are required to have a written policy on disconnecting from work. The goal is to promote a healthier work-life balance and reduce work-related stress.

3) Stress management techniques like mindfulness and deep breathing exercises can be invaluable. Take short breaks throughout the day to practice these techniques. Even a few minutes of deep breathing can lower your heart rate and reduce stress hormones.

4) Prioritize your physical health. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate sleep are crucial for stress resilience. Physical activity releases endorphins, which naturally improve your mood and reduce stress levels.

5) Don't hesitate to seek support. Talk to a trusted friend, family member, or therapist about your stress. They can offer a listening ear, valuable advice, or simply a distraction from work. If your stress feels overwhelming, consider seeking professional help from a therapist or counselor.

Remember, coping with workplace stress is a continuous journey. It requires self-awareness, commitment, and a willingness to adapt. By actively addressing your stressors and incorporating healthy habits into your daily routine, you can reclaim control and create a more balanced and fulfilling work life.
