Questions, answered

Before your first session

A few things people often want to know. Have another question? We're happy to help.

How do I get started?+

Reach out through the contact form or request a free 15-minute phone consultation. We'll learn a little about what brings you in and match you with a therapist who fits your needs.

Do you accept walk-ins?+

No. We are available by appointment only, so please contact us ahead of time to book a session or request a free 15-minute consultation.

Are your therapists registered and licensed to practice in Ontario?+

Yes. Every therapist at Optima is a Registered Social Worker and Psychotherapist in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW), fully licensed to practice in Ontario. You can review each therapist’s credentials on our About page.

Is psychotherapy or counselling covered by OHIP?+

No — psychotherapy and counselling services provided by Registered Social Workers and Psychotherapists are not covered under OHIP. Many extended health and workplace benefit plans do cover these services, though, and we offer both direct billing and receipts to help make care more accessible (see below).

Do you offer direct billing or receipts?+

Both, depending on what your plan needs. Where we can, we bill your insurance provider directly so you pay little or nothing at your session. If direct billing isn't available for your plan, we provide a receipt you can submit yourself for reimbursement. We recommend checking your plan's coverage for psychotherapy or social work services before your first appointment.

Which insurance providers do you direct bill?+

We offer direct billing for most major insurance providers, including Canada Life, Manulife, Sun Life, GreenShield, Desjardins, and Blue Cross, among others. Coverage and available providers can change, so we recommend calling us to confirm your specific plan is supported before your appointment.

Do you offer virtual sessions?+

Yes. We provide both in-person and secure virtual counselling, so you can choose whatever feels most comfortable and convenient for you.

Is what I share confidential?+

Absolutely. Sessions are private and confidential within the limits set by professional and legal guidelines, which your therapist will walk you through at your first visit.

How long are sessions, and how often?+

Most sessions run about 50 minutes (60 for couples). Frequency is something you and your therapist decide together — weekly to start is common, easing as you progress.

What ages do you work with?+

We support children, adolescents, youth, and adults, as well as couples and families.
